“An American who has called Okinawa his home for the last 24 years, guitarist Carlos J. Saldaña is a fan of smoothed out jazz, circa mid-1970's with a bit of soul. For me, it's also the kind of soulful jazz that was very popular in the Hawaiian islands, dominated by such artists as Seawind, Nohelani Cypriano, and Lemuria. That kind of style was just in the air, and Saldaña is equally adept at singing and playing the guitar while knowing about what to play when the moment is right. He's all about the fulfillment of the late night vibe, and the title of the album couldn't be any more appropriate: “Nothing Else Feels So Right”, (Sun & Fish Records). Much of the songs here have a tropical feel, but it's far from being weak. It's the kind of music one can play while on vacation in some secluded hot spot, but also in a romantic moment while looking for human hot spots. Saldaña, along with The Style Band, never play with too much force, everything is done with an awareness of how to be seductive, how to be fun, and how to hold back when necessary. Saldaña primarily plays the electric guitar, but in Okinawa and throughout Japan he's also known for his acoustic work, some of which is shared here. If the quiet storm is what you long for, this album provides it and then some.”
"Carlos J. Saldana's record, 'Nothing Else Feels So Right', is an R&B/Pop/Soul collection of 10 tunes that are recorded masterfully in Japan with the enlistment of some the country's best studio Cats. A listen to Track 5's, "Party at Tobacco Road", and you can hear them--rhythm and bass players support superbly phrased Strat blues licks along with subtle organ tastes. Of course, the focus of the CD is Saldana's voice and writing. Vocally, he sounds grounded in smooth technique--clear, crisp--with style that utilizes mild acrobatics that don't get in the way of his real purpose--to communicate lyrically. His words are optimistic and idealistic, running through pleas for love and world understanding in the opening track, "Madness", and to any-man's romantic evangelism in "Only For You". The musical arrangements, conducted on most tracks by keyboardist, Hajimu Takeda, are pure R&B radio pop. FM-synthesis fills the key areas with string and horn stabs. Instrumental breaks run the gambit--reminiscent of Lionel Richie's arrangements with a Little River Band ease. There's a bossa-nova beat in Track 7's "All I Need" and a samba in Track 4's, "Your Love Has Set Me Free" to mix the mood up a bit. Track Nine, "So in Love", employs some fine volume-pedal swell guitar work and the production gives us that David Foster feel. The final track, "Love Will Guide Your Way", leaves the listener with the high-energy the ensemble brings. Saldana begins the track with a deep baritone verse that dips into country phrasing before moving up the register to bring the climax over an octave up. Lyrically, Saldana gives homage to his faith in bits and pieces--never over-reaching what is mostly a secular work. And the musical tastiness of the band, in particularly the sax break in the final track, sends the listener into a musical experience that really soars in many moments on the album. And to the extent that it can be allowed in today's music market, the album makes sense from Track 1 to Track 10 - either take a couple or download the whole thing. There's really not a 'missed' track in the entire collection. Great stuff."
